Search Ends In Tragedy As Missing Man Found Drowned In Kota Belud River

A man who was swept away by strong currents while swimming with friends at a river near a homestay in Kampung Tambatuon here yesterday afternoon was found drowned this morning.

The victim, identified as 24-year-old Abner Lasmel from Kiulu, Tuaran, was discovered by members of the public at about 7am, approximately 1.2 kilometres from the last location where he was reported missing.

Kota Belud Fire and Rescue Station chief Elge Bakuk said the department received information about the discovery from villagers before deploying personnel to the scene.

He said the search and rescue (SAR) operation had been launched yesterday afternoon following an emergency call at 6.15pm regarding the incident.

“At about 7am today, we received information that the victim had been found by members of the public,” he said when contacted.

He added that the victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action, while the SAR operation was officially concluded at 10.20am.
