US President Donald Trump is set to mark his 80th birthday in dramatic fashion on Sunday, with reports of a large-scale Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event staged on the White House lawn.
The unprecedented “UFC Freedom 250” spectacle is expected to feature 14 UFC fighters competing inside a giant arena known as “The Claw”, in an event linked to celebrations marking 250 years of US independence.
The event, reportedly costing around US$60 million, has drawn criticism from observers who say the timing is inappropriate given ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran and rising cost pressures faced by the public.
However, the White House has maintained that the UFC is fully funding the production, while officials have defended the event as part of wider national celebrations.
Trump, who is the oldest US president to take office, has publicly supported the initiative, previously describing it as a “unique spectacle” during a meeting with UFC fighters in the Oval Office.
UFC chief content officer Craig Borsari has denied claims that the event blends sport with politics, insisting it is intended as a celebration of American athletes and national pride.
Reports also suggest fighters may make dramatic entrances from the Oval Office before proceeding to an octagon-style cage set up on the South Lawn, with thousands of spectators expected in attendance.
The wider programme is said to include military flyovers, live performances, historical segments and a fireworks display, adding to the scale of the celebration.
The event has already sparked debate in Washington, with critics describing it as a “flashy spectacle” amid concerns over Trump’s health and broader political tensions, while supporters argue it reflects his unconventional approach to public office.
