A 51-year-old motorist has been apprehended by local authorities after a high-speed collision involving a luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV) left six individuals injured. The violent crash occurred in the early hours of the morning along the Kajang–Semenyih Bypass, where a Range Rover Velar 2.0 reportedly ploughed into the rear of a Mazda E1800 Wagon.
Kajang District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, confirmed that the incident took place at approximately 1.20 am. Initial investigations suggest that the driver of the premium SUV lost control of his vehicle before slamming into the back of the multipurpose vehicle (MPV), which functioned as a wagon. The sheer force of the impact caused the Mazda to flip over and land on the left shoulder of the busy thoroughfare.
While the driver of the SUV escaped the wreckage without any physical injuries, the occupants of the MPV were not as fortunate. The driver and five passengers, whose ages range from seven to 51 years old, sustained various injuries during the rollover. Emergency responders quickly transported the victims to both Kajang Hospital and Serdang Hospital to receive urgent medical attention for their wounds.
Following the collision, traffic police conducted a breathalyser test on the 51-year-old suspect, which returned a positive result for alcohol consumption. The man was immediately taken into custody and has been remanded for two days to facilitate further inquiries. Authorities are treating the case with high priority given the involvement of intoxicated driving and the resulting injuries to multiple civilians.
The investigation is currently being professionally handled under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987. If the suspect is found guilty of driving under the influence and causing injury, he faces a mandatory prison sentence of between seven and 10 years. Additionally, the court may impose a hefty fine ranging from RM30,000 to RM50,000 as a deterrent against such dangerous road behaviour.
