Special Branch Officer Fined RM10,000 Over Cash Received From Desperate Father

Date:

A Special Branch officer was fined RM10,000 by the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court after being found guilty of receiving cash from a man in exchange for allegedly helping to bring the man’s son home from Syria through unofficial means.

Nazli Mohamed faced five charges involving a total of RM10,500 received from Zaid Jusoh between May 22 and Dec 29, 2018 in Besut.

The offence, under Section 165 of the Penal Code, carries a punishment of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Sessions Court Judge Azhar Othman ruled that Nazli had failed to raise reasonable doubt against all five charges brought against him.

During proceedings, the court also found that the accused had fabricated stories about having an informant in Syria and travelling to Turkey in efforts to convince the victim that he could help bring the son back to Malaysia.

The victim’s son had reportedly left home in 2015.

“The accused took advantage of a desperate family that wanted their son home, and the father trusted him completely,” the judge said during sentencing.

The court rejected Nazli’s defence that the RM10,500 received from Zaid were merely payments for “health supplements” and personal “loans”, after finding no supporting documents or evidence to back those claims.

Judge Azhar ultimately imposed a RM10,000 fine on the accused, with an alternative sentence of nine months’ jail if he failed to pay.

In delivering the sentence, the judge noted that Nazli was a first-time offender and had already been suspended from duty since 2020.

The court also took into consideration that the officer’s wife is currently expecting their third child soon.
