Spectacular Drone Show in China Turns Chaotic After Sparks Ignite Hillside Fire

Date:

On the night of October 2, a spectacular fireworks and drone light show lit up the skies above the Liuyang River in China’s Hunan Province. Hundreds of drones took flight in perfect formation, synchronized with dazzling fireworks that illuminated the night and drew gasps of awe from spectators along the riverbanks. However, the mesmerizing display took a sudden turn when sparks from the fireworks reportedly fell onto a nearby hillside, igniting dry grass and sparking a small fire.

According to Jimu News, the blaze was relatively minor. Security and event staff quickly spotted the flames and immediately activated the emergency response plan. The fire mainly affected surface vegetation and was swiftly extinguished without injuries or significant damage. Officials later confirmed that the overall performance continued as scheduled.

A representative from the Liuyang City Bureau of Culture, Tourism, Radio, Television, and Sports stated that safety measures had been put in place before the event, including designated fall zones for fireworks where public access was restricted. Only firefighters and event personnel were stationed in these areas. The official added that due to the dry weather and the presence of flammable straw, there was a known risk of fire—but thanks to the quick response of the fire department and local authorities, the situation was contained promptly.

Huashang Daily later reported that the scenic area’s management confirmed the fire was extinguished in a very short time and had no impact on subsequent shows. Authorities emphasized that all emergency actions were carried out strictly according to safety protocols.

Local firefighters verified that the blaze originated from sparks produced during the drone show that accidentally ignited dry grass on the hillside. Despite the brief incident, Liuyang’s “Sky Theater” went ahead with its planned fireworks performances on October 2 and 3 without further issues.
