All events at the Selangor Para Sukma Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 will be cancelled if the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200, amid concerns over the health risks posed by the worsening haze to athletes and officials.
Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the decision was among the preventive measures agreed upon during a meeting with the Para Sukma Special Technical Committee, which was also attended by National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Jefri Ngadirin.
He said all athletes and officials would also be required to wear N95 face masks whenever they were outside buildings or vehicles.
“Exposure to the haze must be reduced by staying indoors or inside enclosed vehicles when not competing or during rest periods.
“All sporting events will be cancelled if the API reaches 200,” he said in a statement today.
Najwan, who is also deputy chairman of the Selangor Sukma and Para Sukma Organising Committee, said the medical teams accompanying each contingent must conduct health screenings and ensure athletes who are vulnerable to the effects of haze are not allowed to compete.
Every participating athlete must also complete a declaration form acknowledging their decision to compete under hazy conditions.
“Atheletes who are not competing are not allowed to be at competition venues or in open areas,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Para Sukma Selangor 2026 contingent heads’ meeting reached a consensus to continue the lawn bowls, archery, swimming and athletics events, subject to preventive measures and continuous monitoring of the haze situation in Selangor.
For athletics, the Special Technical Committee decided that each competition session would be shortened to a maximum of two hours, with sessions scheduled from 8am to 10am, 4pm to 6pm and 8pm to 10pm.
Najwan added that medal ceremonies would be held at the UiTM Shah Alam Sports Complex Hall from this afternoon onwards, immediately after each competition session concludes.
“The API reading in Shah Alam as of 11am today was at an unhealthy level of 169, while Klang recorded 161,” he said.
