Sultan Nazrin Warns Social Media, Global Lifestyles Threaten Muslim Identity

Date:

Social media, popular culture and global lifestyles are increasingly influencing younger generations, raising concerns over the preservation of Muslim character and the identity of the ummah, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah said.

He said Muslims must navigate modernity carefully without allowing outside influences to weaken their religious principles, values and sense of identity.

According to Sultan Nazrin, the growing exposure of young people to global trends through social media, entertainment and popular culture could contribute to an identity crisis if not addressed through thoughtful and sustained efforts.

“Against this backdrop, both Muslim character and the identity of the ummah face serious challenges that must be addressed. Muslims are increasingly exposed to global influences.

“Social media, popular culture, entertainment and global lifestyles are shaping the minds of the younger generation,” he said.

Sultan Nazrin was speaking at the Perak-level Maulidur Rasul celebration themed “Fostering Muslim Character – Fortifying the Identity of the Ummah”.

Also in attendance were Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim, Raja Muda of Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa, Raja Di-Hilir Perak Raja Iskandar Dzulkarnain Sultan Idris and Menteri Besar Perak Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

The Sultan also expressed concern over growing divisions within the Muslim community, saying differences in political views, Islamic schools of thought, race and interests were increasingly overshadowing the spirit of brotherhood.

He said the pursuit of influence, status, wealth and worldly comforts could further widen divisions and push the values of Muslim solidarity to the margins.

Sultan Nazrin urged Muslim leaders, Islamic organisations and movements to avoid unnecessary disputes and reduce political rivalry, stressing that greater attention should instead be given to initiatives that strengthen the community’s identity.

He acknowledged that despite political differences, various individuals and groups were already driving constructive efforts in areas including Islamic education, the Islamic economy, Islamic finance, halal industries, Islamic endowments, digital Islamic outreach and the strengthening of family institutions.

“These positive efforts must be expanded, strengthened and brought to fruition,” he said.

He stressed that strengthening Muslim identity should be treated as a shared responsibility, particularly at a time when younger generations are exposed to an increasingly borderless flow of information and cultural influences.
