Teen Pleads Not Guilty Over Fatal Hit-And-Run Cycling Death In Kuching

A 19-year-old teenager has pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to a charge of reckless driving causing death in a hit-and-run case that claimed the life of a cyclist last Friday.

The accused was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for allegedly driving recklessly and causing the death of a 56-year-old cyclist along Jalan Stutong.

Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali set June 23 for case management and allowed the accused to be released on RM20,000 bail with two sureties. The court also ordered him to report to the nearest police station once a month.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Fillanny Siji, while the accused was represented by counsel Daniel Ling.

According to case facts, the incident occurred at about 5.43am on May 1 when the cyclist was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. The victim was later pronounced dead by paramedics at 6.30am.

The accused later surrendered himself at the Kuching District Police Headquarters on May 5 before being charged in court.
