Teen Remanded Four Days Over Abandoned Baby Case In Tawau

Date:

A teenage boy who recently completed his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) has been remanded for four days to assist investigations into the discovery of an abandoned baby girl at a bushy area in Kampung Jawa.

The remand order, which runs until July 25, was issued by Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum after a request was submitted by investigating officer Inspector Robiatul Adawiyah Japri from the Tawau District Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department.

Based on initial reports, the 3.1kg baby girl was found by members of the public at about 6am yesterday in a bushy area near a house in Kampung Jawa.

The infant was later taken to Tawau Hospital by ambulance personnel for medical examination and further treatment.

Following information gathered during investigations, police arrested a teenage boy, who is believed to be a suspect, in front of a house at Kampung Jawa Sentosa, Jalan Guru, at around 10.40am yesterday.

About 30 minutes later, police also detained a 15-year-old teenage girl at another house in the same village to assist investigations into the case.

Police said further checks found that the teenage girl was a foreign national who was suspected of being in Malaysia without valid travel documents.

“She has been detained for 14 days under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

“The teenager is currently receiving treatment at Tawau Hospital together with the baby girl,” police said.

Meanwhile, Tawau acting district police chief Superintendent Wilynton Enchana Watt said police received two reports regarding the discovery of the baby and the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code.
