Thai Woman Killed in Train Crash Was Heading to Father’s Funeral

Date:

At least 32 people have now been confirmed dead in the tragic train crash in Thailand on January 14, including a Thai woman who was returning home to attend her father’s funeral.

According to Khaosod English, 13-year-old construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in Sikhio, Nakhon Ratchasima, blocking its path. One of the victims was identified as Chananyat Wongchan, who was on board the train’s second carriage as she made her way home.

Chananyat had announced on January 13 on social media that her father had passed away and that she would be returning home soon. A few hours before the accident, she told a relative she was travelling on January 14.

After the crash, Chananyat’s boyfriend confirmed on social media that her body had been found, writing:
“From the crane collapse onto the train, I have now found my girlfriend’s body. Today is the day my heart is completely broken.”

The accident occurred at around 9:45am local time along the Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail corridor, between Lam Takhong and Sikhiu districts. The train was travelling from Krung Thep Aphiwat station in Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani when it struck a fallen construction crane in Ban Thanon Khot village.

Officials say the confirmed death toll stands at 32, with three people still missing and 66 others injured. Local rescue teams continued searching the wreckage into the evening, while investigators work to determine how the crane came to collapse onto the tracks.
