Three Malaysian nationals were arrested by Thai police after 87 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth an estimated RM4.3 million was allegedly discovered hidden inside their luggage aboard a train travelling from Bangkok to Hat Yai.
A Thai police spokesperson said the suspects were arrested at Hat Yai Railway Station during a joint operation involving Hat Yai narcotics officers, railway police, tourist police and the Office of the Narcotics Control Board Region 9.
According to the spokesperson, the three men were travelling from Bangkok to Hat Yai when officers intercepted and searched them.
Police allegedly found 87kg of crystal methamphetamine (syabu) concealed inside three wheeled suitcases and three backpacks.
Investigators believe the drugs were intended for delivery to a drug trafficking syndicate operating in Malaysia.
Preliminary investigations revealed that each suspect had allegedly been promised RM8,000 to transport the drugs to a designated destination.
Thai authorities are continuing investigations to identify the mastermind behind the cross-border drug trafficking operation, as well as any accomplices in Thailand and overseas.
The three Malaysians are currently being investigated under Thailand’s narcotics laws.
