A tourist was forced to jump into the sea to escape a pack of stray dogs after being chased along Pantai Cenang in Langkawi early Tuesday morning.
The incident, which occurred at around 6.58am, went viral after footage shared on the TikTok account @Langkawi Channel showed about six to eight stray dogs roaming along the beach.
In the video, the dogs were seen chasing and surrounding a tourist who appeared to be jogging or walking along the shoreline.
The tourist initially attempted to move away from the animals but eventually entered the sea to avoid being pursued further.
Several of the dogs remained near the water’s edge, barking towards the tourist before the pack gradually dispersed.
The footage has raised concerns among members of the public over visitor safety, particularly as Pantai Cenang is one of Langkawi’s popular tourist destinations and attracts large numbers of visitors, including families with children.
In the comments section, TikTok user @Shah@zuan sarcastically suggested that some people might eventually blame the tourist for the incident.
“After this, perhaps some animal lovers will say the tourist was the one who disturbed the dogs first,” the user commented.
Another user, @P3nd0s4, said stray dogs could become more aggressive and confident when moving in groups.
“They become brave because there are so many of them. If there was only one, it might not even dare to approach people,” the user said.
Meanwhile, @Bitakassim described the situation as worrying given the location’s popularity among tourists and families.
“If it has reached this point, it is quite dangerous for the public because the area is a popular destination and is also visited by children,” the user said.
The incident has since prompted calls for greater attention to stray animal management at busy tourist areas to help prevent similar situations from occurring.
