The driver of a trailer involved in a devastating crash that claimed the lives of four members of the same family has tested positive for methamphetamine, police revealed on Monday.
Bentong District Police Chief Superintendent Zaiham Mohd Kahar said a urine screening conducted on the 40-year-old suspect confirmed the presence of the illicit drug.
“The trailer driver was arrested at 4am today, and an application for his remand will be made,” he said in a statement.
The arrest comes a day after a horrific accident at Kilometre 43 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK), where a trailer carrying wood dust overturned and crushed a Honda City travelling on the highway.
The collision occurred at approximately 4.30pm and left the car completely wrecked beneath the weight of the trailer.
The victims were identified as A. Halim Hasoon, 55, Rozita Buang, 68, Norbahyah A. Halim, 26, and one-year-old Nayla Afya Aizat Faizal. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns over road safety along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway, particularly the stretch between Kilometre 37 and Kilometre 88, which has long been regarded as one of Malaysia’s most dangerous highways.
Previous reports indicated that the section records an average of four accidents daily, highlighting the persistent risks faced by motorists using the route.
Police investigations into the fatal crash are ongoing.
