A police inspector and a female teacher were killed after the vehicles they were travelling in collided head-on at Kilometre 30 of the Kuala Kangsar-Gerik-Pengkalan Hulu Road on Thursday.
The victims were identified as Inspector Melvindar Singh Gamum Singh, 41, who was attached to the Pengkalan Hulu District Police Headquarters (IPD), and Zuraida Abu Bakar, 47, a teacher at Gerik Vocational College. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Lenggong Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 4.57pm, prompting firefighters to respond to the crash involving a Toyota Vios and a Honda Odyssey multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).
It is understood that Zuraida was travelling with five other educators in the MPV while returning to Gerik after attending a training course in Lenggong.
The remaining occupants, including the MPV driver, survived the collision but sustained injuries. They were taken to the Lenggong Health Clinic for medical treatment.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said firefighters found victims trapped inside both vehicles upon arriving at the scene.
He said the rescue team carried out an assessment before using hydraulic rescue equipment to extricate the trapped victims from the wreckage.
The deceased, comprising the Toyota Vios driver and a rear passenger of the MPV, were later handed over to the police for further action.
The rescue operation, involving five firefighters, was completed at 6.12pm.
