A viral social media post has sparked concern after a Malaysian netizen claimed a nurse stopped a woman from allegedly attempting to swap her baby with another newborn inside a hospital ward.
However, the allegation has not been independently verified, and the post did not disclose when or where the incident was said to have taken place. At the time of writing, no official statement has been issued by the hospital, the Ministry of Health or the authorities.
In a post shared on Threads, the netizen claimed that a Rohingya mother and a Malay mother were admitted to the same hospital ward after giving birth.
According to the post, the Rohingya woman’s baby had been crying repeatedly, while the Malay mother’s newborn, who was in the bed opposite, remained calm.
The netizen alleged that when the Malay mother left her bed to use the toilet, the other woman attempted to switch the two babies.
The post claimed that a nurse noticed what was happening before the alleged exchange could take place, triggering a commotion in the ward. The woman was reportedly reprimanded by hospital staff.
Screenshots of the post showed it had received more than 14,000 likes and had been shared thousands of times, with many netizens expressing alarm over the allegation.
Some users called for tighter security measures in maternity wards, including additional CCTV cameras, stricter monitoring of newborns and closer checks on babies’ identification tags. Others urged new parents to photograph their babies shortly after birth as an extra precaution.
Several commenters also questioned whether the Malay mother had been informed about the alleged incident, while another netizen claimed to have heard of a similar case involving a different hospital. That claim, however, was also unsupported by evidence.
As the discussion gained traction, some social media users called for foreign patients to be placed in separate wards or barred from receiving treatment at government hospitals.
At the time of writing, there is no official confirmation that the alleged baby-swapping incident occurred, and the claims remain unverified.
