A 21-year-old woman was killed after the motorcycle she was riding was hit and run over by a trailer at the Alor Setar Mall traffic light intersection on Friday.
The victim, Nur Atiqah Umairah Suhaimi, was believed to be travelling alongside the trailer from Masjid Aman towards Alor Setar Mall and Taman Desa Seraya at about 5.50pm.
Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali said preliminary investigations found that the motorcycle was travelling too close to the trailer’s left side, which was within the lorry’s blind spot.
He said both vehicles were at the traffic light junction and began moving to make a right turn after the lights turned green.
“The trailer, which was on the motorcycle’s right, then sideswiped and hit the motorcycle,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
The impact caused Nur Atiqah Umairah to fall onto the road before she was run over by the trailer. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 40-year-old trailer driver escaped injury.
Syed Basri said police were continuing investigations, including locating independent witnesses and examining closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from around the scene. Both vehicles were also seized for further inspection.
A urine screening test on the trailer driver came back negative. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
