A 61-year-old woman escaped unhurt after losing control of her Perodua Ativa and crashing into another vehicle and an automatic car wash structure along Jalan Raya here on Thursday.
Kota Belud district police chief Superintendent Khairul Shah Peri said the incident happened at about 9.30am shortly after the woman had completed using the automatic car wash.
“Initial investigations found that the driver lost control of her vehicle after exiting the automatic car wash machine,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The Ativa subsequently veered off course and collided with a nearby parked Perodua Alza before crashing into the iron framework of the car wash.
The collision caused damage to the car wash structure, while both vehicles were also damaged. The woman, however, did not sustain any injuries.
Police are investigating the case under Regulation 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59).
The incident bears similarities to another crash at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) on August 7, when a 66-year-old woman suffered minor injuries after the SUV she was driving crashed into the Level 3 departure hall.
In that case, the vehicle was believed to have moved after the driver failed to engage the “P” gear. She reportedly panicked and pressed the accelerator, causing the SUV to accelerate into the airport building.
The woman managed to exit the vehicle before the collision but sustained minor facial injuries after being struck by shards of broken glass.
Police have reminded motorists to remain vigilant behind the wheel, ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and comply with traffic rules and regulations to reduce the risk of accidents.
