Andy Burnham is set to become the new leader of Britain’s governing Labour Party on Friday, paving the way for him to be sworn in as the country’s next prime minister on Monday.
The 56-year-old, widely known as the “King of the North” for his strong advocacy of Greater Manchester while serving as mayor, secured overwhelming backing from Labour lawmakers to replace Keir Starmer, whose declining popularity prompted the party to seek new leadership.
Burnham’s election at a special Labour conference is expected to be a formality before he officially takes over as Britain’s seventh prime minister in just a decade.
Having returned to Parliament last month after winning the Makerfield constituency, Burnham has outlined a domestic agenda centred on devolving more power from London to regional governments.
He has pledged to deliver what he describes as the “biggest rebalancing of power” across the United Kingdom, arguing that greater regional autonomy would help reduce inequality and address growing frustration among communities that have increasingly shifted their support towards the right-wing Reform UK party.
Labour MPs have backed Burnham in the hope that he can halt Reform UK’s growing popularity ahead of the next general election, which must be held by 2029.
Reform UK, led by veteran Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, has topped several opinion polls in recent months. However, the party has recently faced scrutiny over Farage’s acceptance of donations from wealthy supporters, a development that Labour hopes could weaken its momentum.
Burnham is expected to unveil his Cabinet line-up and provide more details of his policy agenda after officially taking office.
Political analysts say he will face immediate pressure to turn his long-term vision for regional economic development into tangible results, with less than three years before the next general election.
Nigel Wilcock, executive director of the Institute of Economic Development, said Burnham had spent years promoting a different approach to economic growth but now faced the challenge of turning that vision into reality.
