The Election Commission (EC) has proposed adding 17 new state constituencies in Sarawak, which would increase the number of seats in the state assembly from 82 to 99.
The proposed constituencies include Jagoi, Pasir Pandak, Matang, Semarak, Tabuan Jaya, Maong, Samarindah, Sungai Serin, Igan and Tanah Mas.
Other areas identified for new state constituencies are Sungai Merah, Bukit Kemuyang, Melekun, Batu Niah, Permaisuri, Tudan and Usun Apau.
The proposals were outlined in the EC’s Notice of Proposed Recommendations for Federal and State Constituencies in the State of Sarawak, issued under Clause (2) of Article 113 of the Federal Constitution.
Despite the proposed increase in state seats, the EC is not recommending any changes to the number of federal constituencies in Sarawak.
The commission said its review involved examining Sarawak’s existing federal and state electoral boundaries, including identifying federal constituencies that would be affected by the proposed changes.
The review also includes proposed name changes involving one existing federal constituency and 10 state constituencies.
The EC said the boundary review was carried out based on 2,037,648 registered electors listed in the electoral rolls that were endorsed and gazetted on January 29, 2026.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to examine the proposed recommendations and draft constituency plan from September 1 to 30 during normal office hours at locations specified in the official notice.
The documents will also be made available for download through the EC’s official website.
Those who wish to object to the proposed recommendations may submit their representations to the EC within one month from the date the notice is published.
A local inquiry may be conducted if objections are submitted by the Sarawak Government, a local authority whose jurisdiction falls wholly or partly within an affected constituency, or a group of at least 100 registered electors from the constituencies concerned.
The EC said written or online representations opposing the proposals should be submitted to the Sarawak State Elections Director at the Office of the State Elections of Sarawak, 11th Floor, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Simpang Tiga, 93728 Kuching.
The proposed redelineation could significantly reshape Sarawak’s state electoral map, with the public consultation period now providing an opportunity for affected parties and registered voters to voice their views before the process moves forward.
