Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s approval rating has fallen below 50 per cent for the first time since she took office in October, according to a Jiji Press poll published on Thursday.
The survey found support for Takaichi’s cabinet had dropped to 49 per cent, with the sharpest decline recorded among voters in their 60s. Support in that age group fell from 63.7 per cent last month to 39.9 per cent.
Despite the decline, supporters continued to cite Takaichi’s leadership and trustworthiness as key reasons for backing Japan’s first female prime minister.
Among those who disapproved of her administration, the most common reasons were that they “cannot expect much” from the government and dissatisfaction with its policies.
Takaichi strengthened her political position in February after securing a decisive victory in a snap lower house election. Her campaign was boosted by strong support from younger voters, many of whom were drawn to her diplomatic approach, relatable image and the change she represented.
However, her administration has also faced controversy.
In November, Takaichi suggested Japan could intervene militarily if Taiwan came under attack, a stance that strained relations with China, which claims the self-governed island as its territory.
Earlier this month, nearly 150 Japanese academics submitted a petition urging lawmakers to oppose her proposed legislation that would criminalise the desecration of Japan’s national flag.
The government has also benefited from easing inflation in recent months after a period of rapid price increases that contributed to the downfall of Takaichi’s two immediate predecessors.
