Keir Starmer Quits As UK Prime Minister After Popularity Collapse

Date:

Outgoing British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his departure on Monday following a sharp decline in public support, bringing an end to a turbulent two-year tenure marked by economic challenges, political divisions and international crises.

Despite struggling with voters at home, Starmer received praise from several European leaders who viewed him as a dependable partner and credited him with helping rebuild Britain’s relationships across the continent after years of Brexit-related tensions.

Starmer, who became the first non-Conservative prime minister since Britain’s departure from the European Union, consistently ruled out rejoining the bloc. However, he worked to strengthen ties with European nations and improve cooperation on key issues ranging from trade to security.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen paid tribute to the departing leader, describing him as a statesman who quickly established himself on the international stage.

“It can take many leaders years to grow into the statesman you became in just two years,” she said, adding that European and Ukrainian security had been strengthened during his time in office.

One of Starmer’s most significant foreign policy achievements was maintaining Britain’s strong support for Ukraine alongside French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The trio played a central role in coordinating European backing for Kyiv amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also thanked Starmer for his unwavering support, describing their discussions as meaningful and productive while saying the British leader would always be welcome in Ukraine.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin praised Starmer’s efforts to improve relations between Ireland and the United Kingdom, as well as his role in strengthening cooperation between London and the European Union.

While Starmer earned respect internationally, he faced mounting frustration from voters at home. Like many mainstream European leaders, he struggled to counter the growing appeal of anti-establishment parties that promised sweeping political change and capitalised on public dissatisfaction.

Critics frequently accused Starmer of lacking charisma and failing to connect with voters, despite overseeing a government that came to power in 2024 after defeating a deeply unpopular Conservative administration.

Across the Atlantic, the reaction was far less complimentary. US President Donald Trump offered a blunt assessment of Starmer’s legacy, claiming the British leader had “failed badly” on immigration and energy policies — two areas where the pair often disagreed.

Meanwhile, Russia appeared to celebrate Starmer’s departure. Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy to Russian President Vladimir Putin, posted a message on social media claiming credit for his resignation by accusing Starmer of pursuing misguided policies on immigration, crime, energy and the economy.

Starmer’s exit marks another significant chapter in Britain’s post-Brexit political landscape, with attention now turning to who will succeed him and whether the next government can reverse declining public confidence while navigating an increasingly uncertain global environment.
