Kim Jong Un Praises North Korean Troops In ‘Overseas Military Operations’

Date:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has praised soldiers involved in what state media described as “overseas military operations” during celebrations marking the 78th anniversary of the country’s founding.

Speaking at a ceremony in Pyongyang on Wednesday, Kim thanked workers and soldiers for their contributions to the state and gave special recognition to commanders and troops involved in overseas operations, according to state news agency KCNA.

The reference is believed to be linked to North Korean troops deployed to support Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Western and South Korean officials estimate that North Korea has sent between 14,000 and 15,000 troops to fight alongside Russian forces since late 2024.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service estimated in February 2026 that around 6,000 North Korean soldiers had been killed or wounded during the conflict.

North Korea was also continuing preparations for another troop deployment to Russia, although South Korea’s Defence Ministry said in late August there were no indications that an additional deployment was imminent.

In exchange for providing troops and ammunition to Russia, Pyongyang has received economic assistance and military technology from Moscow, according to assessments by South Korean intelligence officials.

Kim’s remarks came as North Korea marked the anniversary of its founding with celebrations in Pyongyang, where the leader highlighted the contributions of the country’s workers and military personnel.
