The by-elections for Sabah’s Kinabatangan parliamentary seat and Lamag state seat will be held on January 24 next year, the Election Commission (EC) announced today. EC chairman Ramlan Harun said nominations for the contests will be held on January 10, with early voting scheduled for January 20.
The by-elections follow the death of Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin on December 5, less than a week after securing a second term as Lamag assemblyman. The 66-year-old had narrowly defended his state seat last month with a majority of just 153 votes.
Bung Moktar was also a six-term Kinabatangan MP, having retained the parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election with a 4,330-vote majority.
Last week, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that Perikatan Nasional would not contest either the Kinabatangan or Lamag by-elections.
