Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook will proceed with his scheduled trip to China, where he will represent Malaysia at the 12th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Transport Ministers’ Meeting in Beijing.
The two-day meeting begins today and will include several bilateral discussions and the signing of memoranda of understanding between Malaysia and China, covering areas including land transport, rail, maritime, aviation and logistics.
According to the Transport Ministry, Loke will travel to Shanghai after the official event in Beijing to join Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s delegation.
He will then return to Malaysia to attend to matters related to his resignation as Transport Minister. The ministry said it would continue to ensure all its responsibilities and affairs are managed professionally during the transition.
Loke, who is also DAP secretary-general, announced on Saturday that he would offer his resignation as Transport Minister following the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Najib Razak.
He said the resignation would only involve his Cabinet position, while other DAP ministers and deputy ministers would remain in the government to maintain political stability.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he would meet Loke after their Shanghai trip to hear his views before deciding on the resignation offer. Anwar said Loke had informed him of the decision but that they had yet to discuss the matter in detail.
