The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has been urged not to overlook potential regulatory weaknesses following the arrest of a Malaysian pilot in Indonesia for allegedly attempting to smuggle 26 kilograms of drugs into the country.
MCA Youth national deputy chairman Mike Chong Yew Chuan said that while the case involved an individual’s alleged actions, the ministry must address broader concerns over the effectiveness of oversight and monitoring mechanisms governing flight crew.
He said the incident had dealt a serious blow to Malaysia’s image and the country’s aviation industry.
According to Chong, the case has also raised questions over whether existing screening procedures, health assessments and regulatory compliance measures are robust enough to detect and prevent aviation personnel responsible for passenger safety from becoming involved in serious criminal activities.
“Although investigations are still ongoing, this case has exposed legitimate concerns regarding the effectiveness of the oversight and monitoring systems governing flight crew,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The public deserves to know whether current screening procedures, health checks and compliance measures are truly effective in detecting and preventing situations like this.”
Chong also highlighted reports alleging that the pilot tested positive for methamphetamine, MDMA and cocaine, saying this made the issue of drug screening even more critical.
“If these reports are accurate, Malaysians deserve answers on whether existing drug screening protocols are adequate, how frequently such tests are conducted, and whether there were weaknesses in the current system that allowed the case to go undetected,” he said.
He stressed that the issue extended beyond one individual and involved maintaining public confidence in Malaysia’s aviation safety framework.
“Flight crew are held to exceptionally high professional standards because they carry enormous responsibility for passenger safety. Any weakness in oversight risks undermining confidence in the systems designed to protect passengers and uphold the integrity of the aviation industry,” he added.
Chong also warned that the incident could have wider implications for Malaysia’s international reputation, particularly as Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is recognised as one of the region’s major aviation hubs.
He said any failure to address the matter transparently and decisively could affect international confidence in Malaysia’s aviation standards and regulatory credibility.
While welcoming Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB)‘s commitment to cooperate fully with authorities and conduct an internal review, Chong said such measures alone were insufficient.
He called on the Ministry of Transport to undertake a comprehensive review of existing flight crew screening and regulatory procedures, identify any systemic weaknesses and implement the necessary improvements.
“The government must provide a full explanation to the public on the safeguards currently in place, whether those procedures were followed in this case, and what additional measures will be introduced to strengthen the monitoring system,” he said.
Chong stressed that accountability was not about assigning blame before investigations were completed, but about ensuring that any shortcomings exposed by the case were addressed transparently and firmly.
“Malaysia’s aviation industry has built its reputation over decades. Protecting that reputation requires more than describing this as an isolated incident. It requires decisive action, greater transparency and a clear commitment to ensuring that every reasonable step is taken to prevent such incidents from happening again,” he said.
