The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) will strengthen safety monitoring and improve grenade training procedures following a deadly explosion at Kem Hobart, Gurun, Kedah on June 16.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the improvements would involve safety protocols, grenade handling procedures, supervision levels and training implementation to reduce the risk of similar incidents happening again.
“Safety of all personnel remains our top priority. There will be no compromise in ensuring every training exercise is conducted with the highest level of compliance, supervision and safety,” he said in a statement today.
The Malaysian Army previously confirmed that its Board of Inquiry (BOI) had completed a full investigation report into the grenade explosion during a training exercise at Kem Hobart.
The incident, which occurred on June 16, 2026, resulted in the deaths of two Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) personnel.
Mohamed Khaled said the investigation process was carried out in several stages according to Army procedures to ensure all technical aspects, compliance with regulations and witness statements were thoroughly reviewed before reaching a conclusion.
He added that the ministry would continue reviewing existing training practices to enhance safety standards and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
