Ministry Pledges Continued Support For Women’s Financial Independence

Date:

The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development will continue offering targeted support and programmes to help women achieve financial independence and contribute meaningfully to their families and the wider economy, said Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She highlighted initiatives such as providing start-up capital and programmes like Program Wanita Dinamik as vital tools to create opportunities for women to showcase their creativity and entrepreneurial skills.

“We need to support our women so they can stand on their own. We provide them with capital, run programmes like Program Wanita Dinamik, and open spaces for them to express their creativity,” Nancy told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Dayung Warisan programme at the Old Courthouse here yesterday.

Nancy noted that Sarawak’s unique culture and diverse local products present strong potential for women-led businesses. She emphasised that when women generate income, they not only uplift themselves but also strengthen the financial stability of their families.

“When women engage in businesses such as handicrafts, they are contributing not only to their household income but also to the state’s economy. We do not want women to rely solely on others, including their husbands or children, who also have their own responsibilities,” she said.

She also stressed the importance of equipping women with knowledge and skills to monetise their talents. She cited examples of producing simple batik using natural materials, such as leaves and plants found locally.

“In my former parliamentary constituency, we encouraged women to create batik products. Today, they are running successful small enterprises, and their products can even be found in popular spots like India Street,” Nancy said.

Beyond financial aid, the ministry also provides essential support, including machinery and dedicated workspaces, enabling women to carry out their activities efficiently and scale their businesses.

This approach underscores the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, combining creativity, skills training, and economic independence as key drivers for sustainable growth.
