Mysterious One-Day Johor Assembly Sitting Sparks Dissolution Speculation

Date:

A sudden announcement of a one-day special sitting of the Johor State Legislative Assembly scheduled for June 22 has sparked renewed speculation that the state government could be heading towards dissolution.

Johor Jaya assemblywoman Liow Cai Tung said she received formal notice of the upcoming session, pointing out what she described as unusual arrangements that differ from standard legislative practice.

She noted that it is rare for two assembly sittings to be held in consecutive months, adding that the upcoming meeting will last only one day and will not include the customary Question and Answer session.

The atypical format has fuelled political chatter, with some observers suggesting it could be linked to preparations for a possible state election, although no official confirmation has been made.

Liow also raised questions over the purpose of the session, saying that while a sitting is not a mandatory requirement for dissolution, the absence of a clear agenda has created uncertainty.

However, Johor State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi had previously dismissed similar rumours, stating that he was unaware of any plans for dissolution at that time.

He clarified that any decision involving a special sitting or dissolution must come from Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and that the Speaker’s office would act only upon formal instruction.

Traditionally, Johor assembly sittings include structured debates and oral questions, making a single-day session without a Q&A segment an uncommon deviation from parliamentary norms.

Such brief sittings are usually reserved for specific legislative matters or key administrative announcements, though the state government has yet to confirm the agenda for the upcoming meeting.

Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi had previously stated that Barisan Nasional intends to contest all 56 state seats, despite its cooperation with Pakatan Harapan at the federal level.
