Mystery ‘8647’ Message Found On National Mall Sparks Federal Investigation

Date:

US authorities have launched an investigation after a large imprint displaying the numbers “8647” was discovered on the grass of the National Mall in Washington, DC, triggering political controversy and speculation over its meaning.

The US Park Police confirmed officers responded to a report of suspected vandalism at around 11.30am local time on Thursday.

In a statement, the agency said investigators are working to determine what caused the visible discolouration on the grass and whether the markings were intentionally created.

“The cause of the discolouration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing and the investigation remains ongoing,” authorities said.

Images circulating online show the numbers 8, 6 and 7 clearly visible on the lawn, although the number 4 appears less distinct.

The discovery has drawn significant attention because some supporters of US President Donald Trump interpret “86” as slang meaning “to get rid of” someone, while “47” is viewed as a reference to Trump as the 47th president of the United States.

Several officials within the Trump administration have alleged that the message could be interpreted as encouraging violence against the president, although authorities have not publicly confirmed any motive behind the markings.

The incident comes amid an ongoing legal battle involving former FBI Director James Comey, who is facing charges related to a separate controversy involving the same numerical sequence.

Prosecutors allege a social media post showing the numbers arranged with seashells on a beach amounted to a threat against Trump. Comey has denied the allegations and described the prosecution as politically motivated.

The “8647” slogan has also appeared at demonstrations and protests opposing the Trump administration, further fuelling debate about its intended meaning.

The markings on the National Mall were reportedly found near the World War II Memorial, one of the capital’s most visited landmarks.

The investigation also comes as the Trump administration continues a major beautification initiative aimed at restoring and upgrading prominent monuments and memorials across Washington.

Among the projects announced are a US$13.1 million refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and plans for a new decorative arch featuring gold-coloured sculptures of lions and eagles.

Authorities have yet to determine who was responsible for the markings or whether any criminal offence was committed.
