PM Anwar Plans Tehran Visit After Phone Call With Iranian President

Date:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has revealed plans to visit Tehran following a phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian amid growing diplomatic engagement between Malaysia and Iran.

In a social media post, Anwar said he expressed appreciation to Iran for helping facilitate the release of another Malaysian vessel stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, while also voicing hope that peace would soon return to the region.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed Malaysia’s stance condemning drone attacks and military actions carried out by Israel and the United States.

According to Anwar, Pezeshkian thanked Malaysia for consistently supporting peace efforts and humanitarian principles before extending an invitation for the Malaysian leader to visit Tehran to further strengthen bilateral and strategic relations.

“God willing, I will arrange to visit Iran at an appropriate time,” Anwar said, although no timeline for the trip was disclosed.

He added that Iran holds a special place in his heart due to the many friendships and connections he has built there over the years, especially among those who uphold values of knowledge, brotherhood and humanitarian struggle.

Relations between Malaysia and Iran have drawn increased attention in recent months after seven Malaysian vessels became stranded in the Strait of Hormuz following military strikes by the United States and Israel in late February.

Anwar previously announced in March that Iran had agreed to allow Malaysian vessels to pass through the strategic waterway after discussions with Iranian officials.

So far, four Malaysian vessels have reportedly managed to clear the Strait of Hormuz safely, easing concerns over regional trade and maritime security.

Malaysia has previously sent foreign ministers and deputy prime ministers to Tehran, though no Malaysian prime minister is publicly known to have made an official visit to Iran before.
