PM Anwar, Putin Discuss Energy Security And Expanded Malaysia-Russia Cooperation

Date:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin held high-level talks on Thursday, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new areas of cooperation between Malaysia and Russia.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders discussed a wide range of strategic issues, including efforts to enhance collaboration in the energy sector, which remains a key area of interest for both nations.

The discussions also touched on expanding economic ties, with Malaysia expressing appreciation for Russia’s commitment to long-term cooperation in energy and oil supply. Energy security continues to be a priority for the Madani Government as it seeks to ensure a stable and sustainable supply for the country.

Beyond energy, Anwar and Putin exchanged views on opportunities in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), modern agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry.

The two leaders also explored measures to facilitate the movement of people between the two countries through visa-free arrangements, while examining mechanisms to boost bilateral trade and investment using local currencies, namely the Malaysian ringgit and Russian ruble.

The Prime Minister’s Office said the government will continue to pursue strategic and proactive initiatives to strengthen the nation’s energy resilience through international partnerships that support long-term stability, continuity and economic growth.

Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, is currently in Kazan to attend the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit, taking place from June 17 to 18.
