A man in his 50s was injured after allegedly driving against traffic and crashing his Toyota Camry into a lorry along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred at Kilometre 54.7 of the highway and was captured in a viral video circulating on social media. Footage showed the car travelling at high speed in the wrong direction before colliding with the front left side of an Isuzu lorry that was travelling in the right lane.
Bentong Fire and Rescue Station Chief Syed Moshen T. Ismail said firefighters received an emergency call at about 9.20pm and immediately rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, rescue personnel found the driver trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle. Firefighters carried out a rescue operation using hydraulic cutting equipment and a power unit to free the victim from the wreckage.
“The accident involved an Isuzu lorry and a Toyota Camry. A male driver was trapped inside the car and had to be extricated by firefighters,” he said.
The victim sustained injuries to his head and legs before being handed over to ambulance personnel for further medical treatment.
Syed Moshen also revealed that severe traffic congestion delayed rescue efforts. The congestion was reportedly caused by lorry drivers stopping along the highway to observe the crash scene, obstructing the movement of emergency vehicles.
As a result, firefighters were forced to leave their vehicle and carry rescue equipment on foot for approximately 200 metres while requesting lorry drivers to move their vehicles to clear a path.
The trapped driver was successfully rescued at 10.29pm, and the operation concluded at 10.56pm.
