PM Anwar Slams Assassination Of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Calls For Immediate Ceasefire

Date:

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has strongly condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, warning that the act risks pushing West Asia towards prolonged and severe instability.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Anwar said Malaysia unequivocally denounces the assassination and extends its condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran and its people.

He cautioned that those who view the death with satisfaction must recognise the far-reaching consequences that could follow such an action.

“Existential threats rarely produce predictable reactions. Deliberately targeting a head of state sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the norms and principles that underpin the international order,” he said.

At the same time, Anwar urged the Iranian authorities to exercise restraint and avoid measures that could further escalate tensions.

Malaysia, he added, supports calls by various nations for all parties to step back from actions that may intensify the conflict.

The prime minister stressed that his immediate priority is the welfare and safety of Malaysians residing in Iran, the Gulf states and across the wider West Asian region.

“The government is taking all necessary steps to ensure their protection. All Malaysian missions have been given full mandate and resources to assist our citizens in affected areas,” he said.

On the economic front, Anwar said Putrajaya will promptly assess the broader implications of the conflict, including potential risks to regional airspace and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Reiterating Malaysia’s position, he called for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of civilians.

“This crisis cannot be resolved through force. It demands diplomacy, restraint and political will,” he stressed.
