Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has appealed to Melaka DAP to postpone its decision to withdraw from the state government, urging the party to prioritise development efforts and the welfare of the people.
Anwar, who is also the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH), said he had discussed the matter with DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He expressed hope that further negotiations could lead to a mutually acceptable resolution.
“I have spoken to Minister Loke, the Melaka DAP leadership, and the Chief Minister. I asked them to continue discussions and delay the decision for now so that we can continue working together with the state government until the election,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of Midport Smart AI Container Port in Port Dickson on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister said differing opinions among coalition partners were not unusual and should not derail efforts to deliver economic growth and improve public welfare.
“Even if there are two or three issues that we disagree on, that is normal. There are many matters we do not always agree on, but when it comes to policies that benefit the economy and the people, we must continue moving forward,” he said.
He added that postponing the move would allow the Melaka state administration to carry out its responsibilities smoothly until the state election is concluded.
Earlier on Tuesday, Melaka DAP announced its immediate withdrawal from the state government after the Melaka State Legislative Assembly passed amendments to the State Constitution allowing the appointment of nominated state assembly members.
Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said the party’s decision was consistent with its long-standing opposition to the amendment, arguing that it contradicts democratic principles and the electoral process.
