Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Malaysians not to allow differences in race, religion and culture to be manipulated in ways that could threaten national unity.
He said history had shown that the country’s independence was achieved through the contributions of all communities, with the Malay community playing a key role in the struggle.
Anwar stressed that the focus today should be on efforts to improve the dignity and wellbeing of the people and the nation, rather than dwelling on differences in appearance or background.
“Independence would not have been possible without the involvement of the Chinese, Indian and other communities, including those in Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.
He was speaking at the launch of the National Month and Fly Jalur Gemilang 2026 programme at the Sultan Azlan Shah Health Ministry Training Institute (ILKKM SAS) here on Sunday.
Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
Anwar said the principle of “Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu” introduced by Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, should continue to serve as a foundation in strengthening unity.
He added that the concept was aligned with the idea of “unity in diversity”, which recognises differences among communities as a strength rather than a weakness.
He said unity should be built to improve the quality of life for Malaysians and strengthen the nation, rather than being used for personal interests or exploitation.
“Through the Madani framework, we add values to ensure this country becomes stronger and more successful,” he said.
The Tambun Member of Parliament also emphasised that the meaning of independence today should focus on national development, including advancements in technology, economic growth and improving public welfare.
He said efforts must continue to ensure the country’s wealth is distributed fairly and benefits all Malaysians.
Anwar added that celebrating independence was not merely about flying the Jalur Gemilang, but about understanding the sacrifices of previous generations and committing to building a better future for the nation.
