PM Tenure Limit Bill Among Key Laws In Parliament

Date:

Four key legislative proposals, including a plan to impose a 10-year limit on the tenure of the prime minister, are set to take centre stage when the Dewan Rakyat convenes on Monday.

The second meeting of the fifth session of the 15th Parliament, running until July 16, will also revisit several major reforms, including the Constitution (Amendment) Bill (No 2) 2026, which seeks to separate the roles of the attorney general and public prosecutor, alongside the Cybercrime Bill 2026 and amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987.

The proposed constitutional amendment to cap the prime minister’s tenure at a decade was previously tabled in March but failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Another major item on the agenda is the Road Transport Act amendment bill, which is expected to be tabled on the first day of the sitting before being debated the following day, with provisions aimed at tackling illegal racing and improving road safety.

Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook has said the amendments involve 11 areas and 42 clauses designed to address increasingly dangerous street racing activities.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul has urged MPs to conduct debates in a disciplined and responsible manner, stressing the importance of focusing on national issues and public interest.

He also reminded lawmakers, including those contesting in the Johor state election, to continue fulfilling their parliamentary duties despite the overlapping political campaign period.

The Dewan Negara is scheduled to hold its own 10-day sitting from July 20 to August 4 following the conclusion of the Dewan Rakyat session.
