Pope Leo Urges Global Peace After Another Social Media Attack From Trump

Date:

Pope Leo has urged the world to embrace peace and coexistence, following renewed criticism from US President Donald Trump on social media during his ongoing Africa tour.

Speaking aboard a flight from Algeria to Cameroon on Wednesday (Apr 15), the pontiff emphasised the importance of dialogue between communities of different faiths and cultures, stressing that peaceful living despite differences in belief is essential for today’s world.

“Although we have different beliefs, we have different ways of worshipping, we have different ways of living, we can live together in peace,” he said, reflecting on his visit to predominantly Muslim Algeria, where Catholics remain a small minority.

The Pope’s remarks come after Trump repeatedly criticised him online, with the US president describing him as “terrible” earlier this week and later doubling down despite backlash from various Christian groups across the United States.

US Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, saying it is important for the Pope to be “careful” when addressing theological matters in relation to global conflicts. Pope Leo, however, did not directly respond to the comments during his flight.

During his journey, the pontiff referenced St Augustine of Hippo, highlighting the saint’s teachings on unity and respect among all peoples regardless of differences, reinforcing his broader message of harmony.

Upon arrival in Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé, Pope Leo was welcomed by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute in a formal reception that included a red-carpet ceremony, clergy gatherings, and a brass band performance.

The Pope is also expected to meet President Paul Biya and address national leaders, with discussions likely to include ongoing tensions in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions.

As part of his wider African tour covering several countries, Pope Leo continues to call for peace in conflict zones while maintaining his stance on global issues, including the US-Israeli war with Iran, which he has recently criticised.
