PRN Unlikely In Negeri Sembilan Amid Political Uncertainty, Says PM

Date:

The possibility of a state election in Negeri Sembilan remains uncertain, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim indicating that polls may not be necessary despite the ongoing political instability.

Anwar said the decision ultimately rests with the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, as well as developments within the State Legislative Assembly. The situation underscores the role of constitutional monarchy and legislative proceedings in determining the state’s political direction.

“Possibly not,” he said when asked if a state election would be called. “It depends… it is up to Tuanku and, of course, the sitting of the assembly,” he told reporters.

The Prime Minister made the remarks after attending a closed-door meeting with Huawei’s top management, held in conjunction with the launch of the Huawei AI Lab and Innovation Centre on Monday.

He added that any updates regarding the Negeri Sembilan administration would be announced in the near future, suggesting that discussions at the highest levels are ongoing.

Meanwhile, UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed that he will meet Anwar soon to deliberate on the matter. Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said the talks will include the recent move by 14 Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblymen who withdrew their support for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun.

Earlier on Monday, Aminuddin reiterated during a press conference that he remains Menteri Besar despite the withdrawal of support, maintaining that the state government continues to function as usual while awaiting further clarity.
