Russia Warns NATO’s Arctic Moves Pose ‘Direct Threat’ To Its Security

Date:

Russia has warned that increasing NATO military activity in the Arctic represents a direct threat to its national security, as the alliance strengthens its presence in the region amid growing tensions following the war in Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the remarks in an article published by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday, describing NATO military exercises in the Far North as “aggressive”.

“Such military activity in the Far North poses direct threats to Russia’s security. The risks of incidents that could trigger an armed confrontation, with potentially catastrophic consequences, are increasing,” Lavrov said.

The warning comes after NATO launched its Arctic Sentry mission in February to strengthen its presence in the region. The move reflects the alliance’s growing focus on the Arctic as tensions with Moscow continue, while US President Donald Trump has also pushed for the acquisition of Greenland.

Russia considers the Arctic a key area of strategic interest. It maintains the region’s largest military presence and most extensive military infrastructure, including a naval fleet equipped with nuclear-armed submarines.

Moscow also views the Arctic as an important economic corridor, with Russia developing a shipping route aimed at strengthening connections with Asian countries.

Russia has previously criticised NATO’s Arctic Sentry mission, while Lavrov’s latest comments reinforce Moscow’s concerns over the alliance’s expanding military footprint in the Far North.

Meanwhile, China has also increased its activities in the resource-rich Arctic in recent years, largely through cooperation with Russia.

Norway, which shares a border with Russia, expanded its Arctic military presence this month by strengthening a recently established brigade headquartered in the region. The move is among the latest efforts by a NATO member to boost its defence capabilities following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Moscow has previously rejected allegations that it poses a threat to NATO, maintaining that its military activities are aimed at protecting Russian interests and security.

The Arctic has increasingly become an area of strategic competition involving Russia, NATO members and China, with military security, shipping routes and natural resources all contributing to rising tensions.
