Trump Accuses Democratic Lawmakers of ‘Seditious Behaviour’, Says It’s Punishable by Death

Date:

President Donald Trump has accused six Democratic lawmakers of “seditious behaviour, punishable by death” after they released a video urging US military personnel to refuse unlawful orders.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump labelled the officials as “traitors”, stating: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???” and claiming their actions threatened national security. In another post, he wrote: “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” and shared a comment urging their execution.

The video, shared by Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, features Senator Mark Kelly and Representatives Chris DeLuzio, Maggie Goodlander, Chrissy Houlahan and Jason Crow. All have backgrounds in the military or intelligence. In the clip, they stress that members of the armed forces can legally refuse illegal orders, stating: “Like us, you swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution.”

In a joint statement, the lawmakers condemned Trump’s remarks as dangerous, adding that threats and intimidation would not deter them from upholding constitutional responsibilities.

At a press briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt rejected claims that Trump was calling for executions, saying he was criticising the suggestion that troops defy “lawful orders”. She described the Democrats’ video as “very dangerous”.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has urged Trump to retract his comments, warning they could lead to violence. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson defended Trump, saying he was merely “defining the crime of sedition”.

Officials say US Capitol Police are coordinating to increase protection for the lawmakers and their families.

The Department of Justice and Pentagon are reviewing the matter.

Trump’s remarks come amid rising concerns over political violence. Surveys show 85% of Americans believe politically motivated attacks are increasing. Recent incidents include the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, an arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s home, and the murder of a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband.

Trump was also targeted in two alleged assassination attempts last year. Political tensions have intensified further with figures such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene reporting an increase in threats following public disputes with Trump.

Authorities have also noted a surge in “swatting” incidents targeting public officials.
