Trump Reimposes Iran Sanctions, Proposes 20% Fee On Cargo Passing Through Strait Of Hormuz

Date:

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will reinstate sanctions on Iran while proposing a 20% charge on all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz, saying the fee would help cover the cost of American security operations in one of the world’s most strategic waterways.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open regardless of Iran’s actions, insisting that the US would continue safeguarding the crucial maritime route.

“The Strait of Hormuz is OPEN and will remain OPEN, with or without Iran,” Trump wrote.

He said Washington would reimpose what he described as the “Sanctions on Iran”, explaining that the measures are intended to prevent Iranian vessels and ships linked to Iranian customers from entering or leaving the area. According to Trump, vessels from all other countries would continue to enjoy unrestricted access through the waterway.

Trump also unveiled a new proposal for the US to become what he called the “Guardian of the Strait of Hormuz”, with global shipping operators required to contribute towards the cost of maintaining security in the region.

“From this point forward, the United States will be known as the ‘GUARDIAN OF THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ.’ In fairness, the US will be reimbursed at a rate of 20% on all cargo shipped to cover the costs of providing security in this highly volatile part of the world,” he said.

The US President added that the measures would take effect immediately.

The announcement comes as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to attract global attention due to its importance to international trade and energy supplies. Any changes affecting the waterway are closely watched by governments and financial markets around the world.
