PAS says cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) should be finalised before any decision is made on the logo to be used in the upcoming Melaka state election.
PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the priority at this stage was to establish cooperation and a mutual understanding between the two coalitions ahead of the polls.
He said PAS was, in principle, more comfortable contesting under its own logo, but stressed that the issue should not become an obstacle to efforts to finalise cooperation.
“We are more comfortable with the PAS logo, but what is important is cooperation and mutual understanding.
“Whatever logo is used will not be an issue if cooperation for the Melaka state election is finalised first,” he told Utusan Malaysia.
Tuan Ibrahim said PAS would also discuss the matter with its PN component parties before making a final decision on the logo.
He said the decision would only be made after discussions with the coalition’s component parties had been completed.
PAS is also hoping the Registrar of Societies (RoS) will allow PN to use its coalition logo after its leadership provides an explanation regarding the suspension imposed on the coalition.
“We hope RoS will allow the use of the PN logo following an explanation from the PN chairman and secretary-general,” he said.
Earlier, BN Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said BN was open to allowing PN to use the coalition’s logo in the Melaka election.
He said the possibility could be considered if PN component parties were genuinely committed to efforts to strengthen cooperation among the Malay-Muslim community.
Meanwhile, a source said no decision had been made on the logo for the Melaka election as RoS had suspended all PN activities effective September 23.
The source said there had also been no discussions on the matter so far, adding that PN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar was currently away from the country.
“Any decision or discussion will be made after he returns to Malaysia,” the source said.
