Umno Sabah has begun early preparations for the 16th General Election (GE16), amid a proposal for the polls to be held ahead of schedule.
Umno Sabah Liaison chairman Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the party remained prepared as a component of the Unity Government, although the date of the general election had yet to be determined.
He said preparations had already begun at the state level, including a recent meeting to discuss the party’s election strategy and machinery.
“For now, we are part of the Unity Government and we have always been prepared.
“Last week, I called a meeting of Umno Sabah to draw up our plans and preparations for the election,” he said after officiating the Sepilok Jazz 2026 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sandakan on Saturday.
Jafry said an election preparation schedule had also been drawn up to ensure the party’s machinery remained on standby.
“I understand that there is already a schedule for us to be on standby. We do not know when it will be, but what is certain is that we have taken steps to prepare,” he said.
His remarks come after Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed that GE16 be held earlier than expected.
