Ex-President Suharto Receives National Hero Title Amid Public Outcry

Date:

Indonesia has posthumously awarded former President Suharto the title of national hero, a decision announced on Monday, November 10, sparking protests from pro-democracy activists and families affected by his decades-long authoritarian rule. Suharto, who was forced to resign in 1998 amid widespread unrest, led Indonesia for over 30 years, a period marked by rapid economic growth but also allegations of human rights abuses, corruption, and nepotism.

The ceremony, presided over by President Prabowo Subianto—Suharto’s former son-in-law—saw the award presented to Suharto’s daughter and son. An announcer hailed Suharto as “a prominent figure from Central Java, a hero of the struggle for independence,” noting his contributions dating back to Indonesia’s fight for freedom from Dutch and Japanese colonial rule.

Suharto, who died in 2008, formally became president in 1967 after seizing control from Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno. His three decades in power brought stability and economic growth, but his legacy unraveled during the 1997–1998 Asian financial crisis, culminating in mass protests that ended his presidency.

The national hero title is awarded annually to Indonesians who have made significant contributions to the nation. This year, Suharto was one of ten recipients honored at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta. His portrait, dressed in military uniform, was displayed prominently alongside images of former president Abdurrahman Wahid and labor activist Marsinah, who was kidnapped and killed during Suharto’s rule, reflecting the complex and contested nature of his legacy.
