Elon Musk Summoned In France Probe Over X Platform And AI Chatbot Grok

Date:

Billionaire Elon Musk has been summoned for a voluntary interview in Paris on April 20 as part of an ongoing French investigation into his social media platform X, although it remains unclear whether he will attend.

French authorities issued the summons in February amid a probe launched in January 2025 into allegations that X’s algorithm may have been used to interfere in French political processes. The investigation has since expanded to include concerns over the platform’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok and its alleged dissemination of Holocaust denial content and sexual deepfakes.

Earlier in February, investigators carried out searches at X’s Paris offices in what the company described as “politicised” raids and an “abusive judicial act”. X has denied all allegations of wrongdoing linked to the case.

At the same time, prosecutors also called on Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino for voluntary interviews in their capacity as senior executives during the period under investigation. Musk previously dismissed the inquiry as a “political attack”, while Yaccarino stepped down as chief executive in July 2025 after two years in the role.

Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed that X employees have also been asked to appear for questioning between April 20 and 24 as part of witness testimonies supporting the investigation.

Authorities have not disclosed the exact timing or location of Musk’s scheduled appearance, and officials noted that non-attendance would not hinder the continuation of the probe.

The French investigation is examining several potential criminal offences, including alleged complicity in the possession of child sexual abuse material and denial of crimes against humanity, all of which X strongly denies.

The case forms part of wider international scrutiny of X’s AI systems, particularly Grok, following reports that users could generate sexualised content involving women and minors through simple prompts. A watchdog report estimated millions of such images were produced in a short period.

Additional investigations have also been launched by regulators in the United Kingdom and the European Union, focusing on whether X and its AI arm complied with data protection laws and the risks posed by synthetic deepfake content.
