Suspect in Assault on Journalist Haresh Deol to Be Charged Today

Date:

The suspect arrested in connection with the assault on veteran journalist Haresh Deol in Bangsar earlier this week is to be charged in court today.

The 37-year-old man will be brought before a magistrate to face charges under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code, which cover voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation. If convicted, the offences carry prison sentences of up to one and two years respectively, fines, or both.

According to city police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus, investigations suggest the assault may have stemmed from a personal dispute involving the suspect’s wife, and authorities believe the attackers may have mistaken Haresh for someone else. Fadil added that the suspect has multiple prior criminal records.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Haresh, who serves as deputy president of the National Press Club and is the founder of Kuala Lumpur-based news outlet Twentytwo13, was attacked by two men dressed in black in Bangsar.
