Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said public opinion has become divided following the rejection of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application for home detention, with some political figures making baseless remarks and emotional interpretations.
Tiong said political fortunes rise and fall, and the political landscape is no exception. He stressed that there is no need to fuel disputes driven by temporary emotions or political calculations, as national stability and the well-being of the people should remain the country’s top priorities.
“I believe this controversy has gone beyond acceptable boundaries and, with the encouragement of certain immature politicians, is gradually being pushed towards racial division. I therefore urge all parties to stop while they are ahead, refrain from reckless speculation and unnecessary disputes, and instead uphold the Malaysian spirit of mutual respect and tolerance,” he said.
Tiong made the remarks in a Facebook post, describing the situation as regrettable and worrying, given that Malaysia is a multi-racial and multicultural nation. He said social harmony and mutual respect have always been among the country’s most valuable assets and should not be exploited or eroded.
He also called on all parties to stop making unnecessary and insensitive remarks, stressing that no one should casually make statements that hurt others.
As an example, Tiong cited instances where netizens involved in recent debates told others to “go back to another country,” reminding Malaysians that ethnic diversity is a unique national strength and should not be used as a political tool.
“If there is boundless energy, channel it into serving the people and strengthening the national economy. If division and provocation continue, our strengths will eventually become weaknesses, and the harm will not be limited to any one community, but will affect the entire nation,” he said.
