Zootopia 2 Crosses US$1.4 Billion, Overtaking Frozen 2 as Disney Animation’s Biggest Box Office Hit

Date:

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2 has overtaken 2019’s Frozen 2 to become the studio’s highest-grossing film of all time, Disney announced on Wednesday, offering a rare bright spot as global box office revenues remain below pre-pandemic levels.

The animated sequel has earned approximately US$1.46 billion worldwide, making it the fifth Disney Animation title to surpass the US$1 billion mark. Its record-breaking performance was boosted by a strong opening during the US Thanksgiving weekend.

A major driver of the film’s success has been its exceptional reception in China, where Zootopia 2 has grossed more than US$560 million. The film dominated its opening weekend in the country, accounting for an estimated 95 per cent of total ticket sales.

Globally, the sequel launched the crucial Hollywood holiday season with about US$556 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend. The film reunites rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and her fox partner Nick Wilde as they embark on a new adventure through the vibrant animal metropolis.

With worldwide box office takings still trailing 2019 levels, the runaway success of Zootopia 2 has provided a welcome boost for Disney and cinema operators, who are counting on strong attendance during the year’s second-busiest moviegoing period.
