S’pore Politician Playfully Tells PM Anwar to “Lepak a Bit” as Ringgit Strengthens from 3.18 to 3.15

Date:

A lighthearted Facebook post by Singapore-based opposition politician Derrick Sim has captured attention online after he playfully told Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to “lepak a bit” while praising his leadership.

In the post, Sim, a member of the People’s Power Party (PPP), began with high praise: “IMO (in my opinion), you’re genuinely one of the BEST Prime Ministers Malaysia has seen in a long, long time.” He then added a joking request: “Maybe you lepak a bit. No need to work so hard lah.”

The post also touched on recent currency developments, noting that the Singapore dollar had strengthened against the ringgit from 3.18 to 3.15 in just two weeks. Sim joked that if the trend continued, Singaporeans might come to Malaysia “only order roti canai kosong and go back liao.” He concluded his playful note with: “Take it easy, PM. Slow and steady win the race.”

Beyond the humour, Sim highlighted Malaysia’s strong economic outlook. He noted that foreign direct investment into the country had surged by 47% this year alone, and argued that Malaysia is becoming a highly attractive destination for global corporations moving supply chains out of China.

On the currency front, Sim suggested the ringgit could strengthen further against the Singapore dollar, potentially moving into the “3.0X range” or even crossing below 3 within 18 months. He pointed to historical context, noting that exchange rates are fluid and shift with economic fundamentals.

The post drew a mix of reactions online. Some netizens joined in the humour, joking about petrol prices and exchange rates, while others questioned the focus, arguing that attention should remain on domestic issues and supporting ordinary Malaysians.
