The Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) thwarted an attempt to smuggle pork carcasses worth RM66,000 into the country yesterday at the Bukit Kayu Hitam border.
Bukit Kayu Hitam MCBA commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nasaruddin M. Nasir said the meat was brought in without valid import documentation.
The seizure was made following a special physical inspection operation at the heavy cargo vehicle lane of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex.
Mohd Nasaruddin said the operation, conducted at about 6.30am, involved the inspection of a single heavy vehicle.
“During initial checks, the vehicle was directed to the weighing counter and recorded a gross weight of 4,200kg.
“It was then sent to Block E1 of the Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS Complex for unloading and a thorough inspection.
“Subsequent checks revealed the vehicle’s net weight to be only 2,200kg. The significant weight discrepancy raised suspicion and led to the discovery of the illegal cargo, which was confirmed to be pork carcasses,” he said in a statement today.
A total of 2,000kg of pork carcasses were seized during the operation.
Imports of pork from Thailand are strictly prohibited due to concerns over African Swine Fever (ASF).
The case is being investigated under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.
